Saint Joseph Catholic Church is located at 703 Klock Street, seven blocks from U.S. Highway 71 in historic Cheneyville. The civil community was established in 1811 as a center of trade, shipping, and commerce for the plantation system that flourished in the community during the antebellum period. The vast sugarcane, cotton, corn, and rice plantations that presently operate in the area remain among the most productive in Louisiana.
The Catholic community at Cheneyville was formally organized in 1914 when the first church was erected on Ford Street. The stylish wooden structure was designated as a mission church of Saint Francis Xavier Cathedral, Alexandria. In 1957 a new brick church was dedicated by Most Reverend Charles P. Greco.
Saint Joseph Parish continues to be a vibrant community of Catholic faith; approximately one hundred fifty members join for Masses on Sundays and Holy Days. The life of the parish includes the Men’s Fellowship, the Ladies’ Christian Prayer Group, the Ladies’ Altar Society; RCIA, Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, Ushers, Altar servers; the Youth Group, quarterly Parish Suppers, and Vacation Bible School for children in the summer.
